Payment guide · Personal and purchase payments

Venmo:
pay with a clearer picture.

A request can look familiar without coming from the person you think it does.

Before you send

  • Verify unexpected requests with the person outside Venmo.
  • Check the actual app activity rather than an emailed payment screenshot.
  • For purchases, check eligibility and terms of Venmo Purchase Protection before paying.

Understand the limits

Purchase payments and personal transfers are not interchangeable. Check the transaction’s type and current protection terms. A payment can later be reversed if its funding was unauthorized; an incoming balance alone is not proof of a safe transaction.

If something goes wrong

For many transactions, open the payment and select Need Help? to start a dispute. If that option is unavailable, use Venmo Support. Do not send a new payment to return an unexpected transfer; ask support to handle it.
