After a suspicious payment

Prepare a clear dispute or support request

Organize your timeline, evidence, and questions for the provider.

U.S. consumer guidance · Reviewed October 27, 2026

Make the first report

Do not delay an urgent report while preparing a polished packet. Identify the affected payments and describe the suspected issue. Ask how supporting records should be sent and whether a written follow-up is needed.

Organize the facts

Keep a sequence of events, transaction references, messages, and case numbers in your own files. Distinguish what you personally did from actions someone else took. Do not guess at facts you cannot establish.

Follow up on the decision

Ask for the explanation and the review process in writing. Point out missing facts or factual errors. A CFPB complaint may raise an unresolved service problem; it does not replace reporting promptly or guarantee reimbursement.
