Purchase protection is not the same as account security

A secure app does not mean every purchase or personal transfer has the same protections.

U.S. consumer guidance · Reviewed October 27, 2026

Separate the questions

Account security is about controlling access. Purchase protection is about eligible purchases and specified problems. Cancellation is about whether a payment can still be stopped. Those are different questions.

Look at the actual transaction

PayPal distinguishes personal transfers from eligible purchase payments. Apple distinguishes pending and accepted Apple Cash transfers. Read the relevant terms before sending, rather than relying on the app’s brand alone.

A practical habit

Before paying a new seller, identify the payment type, the recipient, and the applicable dispute route. Keep a record of the purchase terms you relied on.
